The NRO - Nurturing the Future of Music

The NRO performs two full orchestra concerts each week in Breckenridge’s beautiful Riverwalk Center between late June and mid-August. In addition, members of the NRO take part in smaller chamber concerts during the festival, and the full orchestra plays at several other locations in the state. NRO Alumni currently play in virtually every major and regional orchestra in the U. S. and in orchestras world-wide.

THE MUSIC EXPERIENCE

During his 30 years with the National Repertory Orchestra, Maestro Carl Topilow has led the orchestra to the forefront of summer music festival programs. Every winter, Maestro Topilow and distinguished NRO alumni audition more than 800 young musicians from leading conservatories and music schools in the US and Canada. The finest 89 musicians are chosen for an eight-week, intensive, orchestral fellowship and summer residency in Breckenridge, Colorado. The pre-eminent career-preparatory experience for these musicians is the rigorous rehearsal and performance schedule, during which an entire orchestral season—29 concert—is compressed into eight weeks of demanding repertoire. Not only must these musicians play with a whole complement of new colleagues, but they must also perform a wide range of material with only a few rehearsals for each performance. At the end of the summer, they have developed strong skills under pressure and have brought their musicianship to new heights.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Founded in 1960 as the Blue Jeans Symphony in Estes Park, CO, the orchestra moved to Evergreen, CO in 1966 and changed its name to the Colorado Philharmonic. In 1986, the orchestra relocated to Keystone Resort and changed its name to the National Repertory Orchestra in an effort to better recognize the national/international make-up of its musicians. In 1993, the Town of Breckenridge invited the orchestra to perform in the new Riverwalk Center, now NRO’s summer residence.

An immortal winter giant, the mountain stands tall with a summit elevation of 13,050 feet, blanketed in fresh snow. From the base it invites you, calm and silent. Over a hundred trails expertly carved through its depths and seven chairlifts raising excited patrons to the sky, you stand in awe, captivated by its brilliance as the sun peaks curiously through the snow-filled clouds. It is the Legendary Arapahoe Basin.

Since 1946 Arapahoe Basin has been serving up a fantastic ride for skiers or riders from the Colorado area as well as the world. A-Basin opened on October 10, 2007 - the earliest opening in its 63 years of operation and the first to open nationally. Arapahoe Basin receives over 350 inches of snowfall annually.

Snowboarding is a rather new sport that began in the U.S. in the 1960s. Back then a short-thin board with a rope attached at the nose, called the "Snurfer", was ridden without bindings. In the '70s the snowboard shape began to evolve, but it wasn't until the early '80s that steel edges and P-tex bases were introduced.

This technology gave the control necessary in all snow conditions and the growth of the sport has mushroomed ever since. In the early days most ski areas did not permit snowboarding on their slopes. Today, due in part to the improved image of snowboarding brought about by organized competition, only a few areas discriminate against snowboarders.

Snowboarding has been the fastest growing winter sport for several years and popularity has spread worldwide.

The USASA is proud to be able to represent the recreational and competitive interests of amateur snowboarding in the United States. Our goal is to promote Safe, Fair, & FUN events while fostering a competitive spirit in the snowboard athletes.

Snowboarding was accepted by the International Olympic Committee as a full medal sport for the 1998 Games in Japan. Every US Olympic Team athlete got their start in the USASA.

On a perfect blue-sky day in Summit County, a new layer of snow covers the ruins of a century-old zinc mine on the outskirts of Breckenridge. But even though the metal equipment and timbers are buried in white, there’s still a sense of the history of this place.

The forested hillside that holds the old mine is a popular snowshoe and cross-country ski area today, attracting crowds on fresh-powder days. But in the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was busy with a different kind of activity, as miners scoured the hills of Summit County for precious

gold, silver, and zinc deposits.

That juxtaposition of old and new is a hallmark of Summit County, where a rich mining history has never been forgotten even as the area has been reborn as a recreational playground.
